54. Ensuring sustainable water management
-
Excerpt from government statement
-
As groundwater and surface water are under increasing pressure from climate change, prolonged droughts and irregular rainfall, in addition to strong demographic and economic growth, the Government will ensure intelligent and sustainable management of this vital resource in order to avoid water allocation conflicts. A national water strategy will therefore be drawn up. In addition to implementing the measures set out in the strategy to ensure the long-term supply of drinking water, the 3rd River Basin Management Plan and the 2nd Flood Risk Management Plan will be pursued in conjunction with all the stakeholders concerned. The Government will also focus on raising awareness of responsible water use and promoting water-saving measures. The national drinking water supply will be ensured. Hitherto untapped water resources will also be mobilised. Integrated management at national level also applies to surface water.

Status of implementation/Meco commentary

Work is certainly being carried out in this area, and the next water management plan is also being prepared. However, no concrete results are available yet, not enough measures are implemented.
