• 45. Promoting cycling
  • Excerpt from government statement

  • Priority will be given to developing cycle links between municipal, regional and national cycle paths, with the aim of rapidly creating a contiguous national network of cycle paths. The network of national cycle paths as defined by law will be completed as quickly as possible. In this context, existing synergies with the municipalities will be improved and new synergies will be created to ensure consistent implementation. When new roads are built, the possibility of building cycle paths in parallel will be compulsorily examined. More fast cycle lanes will be introduced.

A campaign to raise awareness of the Highway Code will be conducted to make cyclists more aware of road traffic. Existing subsidies for active mobility will be maintained and extended. The Government will also examine possible adaptations to the Highway Code for S-Pedestrians and will equip itself with the necessary resources to guarantee the safety of cycle paths.

Secure bicycle parking facilities will be installed wherever possible near all public buildings. In close collaboration with the local authorities, bicycle stations equipped with air pumps, recharging facilities for electric bicycles, washing facilities, repair equipment and spare parts will be set up in the busiest locations.

The possibility of taking bicycles or scooters on buses and trams will be extended, even at peak times, in order to improve last-mile mobility.
