• 62. Promotion of organic farming
  • Excerpt from government statement

  • The government will systematically support organic farming, both in the interests of agricultural diversification and the protection of nature, water and biodiversity, as well as with a view to the sustainable management of natural resources.

The government will analyse the current situation in the sector together with the various players concerned, and will formulate ambitious and realistic objectives in order to mobilise the resources needed to achieve them. If necessary, it will introduce additional measures to further support organic farming.

The government will ensure that farmers wishing to convert to organic farming receive optimum support and advice. In this context, the partial conversion of farms to organic farming will also be supported.

The government will subject the NAP-Bio 2025 action plan to a fundamental evaluation with a view to ensuring its practicability, in terms of both production and marketing, with a view to drawing up a new NAP-Bio. If necessary, the Government will carry out a complete overhaul.

  • The revision of the organic action plan is taking place behind closed doors. Since the targets of the current PAN-Bio, which expires in 2025, have been missed by almost 50%, the Minister for Agriculture has stated that the government’s ambitions in terms of organic farming will be quite modest. Setting of the goals will apparently be done regarding the EU average, for example, even though there are major differences between countries and Luxembourg should aspire to be among the more progressive ones (like our neighbouring countries).

The Minister of Agriculture clearly stated in a meeting with the Mouvement Ecologique that ‘organic is not my priority’.
