38. Making rail travel more attractive
-
Excerpt from government statement
-
The rail network will continue to be developed. Its capacity will be increased, so that the railways will continue to be an attractive and reliable means of transport.
In order to improve the frequency, punctuality and reliability of trains, the Government will examine the possibilities for double-tracking all existing railway lines, in particular the section between Sandweiler/Contern and Oetrange on the line from Luxembourg to Wasserbillig, as well as the section between Ettelbruck and Troisvierges-frontière on the northern line.
Existing railway lines will be developed and better linked, and the construction of new railway lines will be studied.
Station platforms will be refurbished to improve safety and make them more comfortable to use.Free Wi-Fi will be introduced in all stations that do not yet have it, and on national railway lines.
Safety on board trains will be enhanced by the addition of security staff.

Status of implementation/Meco commentary

-
Minor infrastructure works are intended to improve punctuality. Various studies on the feasibility of double-track sections as well as on network optimisation (short link between two lines) have been commissioned. Platforms are being renovated until all of them are compliant and accessible for persons with reduced mobility. Preparations are underway for the upgrading of the rail line between Ettelbrück and Diekirch, but work is not expected to begin before 2035. The mobile network along railway lines is being improved, as this is a prerequisite for displaying bus real-time connections on trains and providing Wi-Fi on board. To date, however, these measures are not yet visible or usable for passengers.
