37. Optimise rail network connections in the greater region
-
Excerpt from government statement
-
The Government will work with the governments and authorities of our neighbouring countries to ensure that Luxembourg is better connected to the international rail network. In particular, the aim will be to improve the Luxembourg-Brussels rail link, increase the frequency of trains between Luxembourg and Thionville and work towards a better connection to the German rail network as a whole. In view of the success of the express bus line linking Luxembourg to Saarbrücken, the discussions initiated with Saarland to carry out a study of the potential for setting up rail links, either via Metz or via Konz, will be continued.

According to the ministry, a number of one-off measures are being made on an ongoing basis in the direction of Brussels to reduce journey times.
Since November 2024, an international study has been underway with Germany and France to improve connections to the German network.
From December 2025, there will be a direct connection to Libramont.
As infrastructure works in the French network towards Thionville have not yet been completed, the frequency of trains to that destination cannot yet be increased. However, since 15 September 2025, longer trains have been deployed during peak hours.
